Despite a stiff breeze and a few showers, the crowds flocked into Skipton last Sunday (4th July) for the annual Sheep Day festival on the High Street – and hundreds of people gathered around the main arena throughout the day to cheer on their favourites in the 'live' sheep racing.

The races, organised by the Young Farmers Association marked the return of real sheep to the High Street for the first time in four years.

Visitors were able to see sheep dog and sheep shearing demonstrations, courtesy of the Mellin Family and were able to get 'up close' with live sheep, including a number of rare breeds, shown by Gavin Howarth of the Jacob Sheep Society.

Crowds also gathered to watch chain-saw carvings of sheep (and bears!) being made, and could try their hand at drystone walling.

The very popular 'bucking sheep' was back again attracting challengers throughout the day to see who could hang on the longest – and the children's activity tent was packed all through the day with sheep-themed art and craft activities.

Skipton Town Mayor, Cllr Robert Heseltine, officially opened the festival. He said: "Events like Sheep Day continue to contribute greatly to both the cultural depth and the overall success of Skipton. It was particularly pleasing to see vast numbers of youngsters involved in the traditional and creative events – and a delight to listen to our very own Skipton Brass Band returning to the glory of its former self."

The event is organised by Skipton Town Council, supported by funding from the Skipton Business Improvement District.

Sheep Day also saw the launch of a schools and community project, which is part of the forthcoming 'Flock to Skipton' event. Over 30 sheep, all with designs created and painted by local schools, nurseries and scout groups, are now on display in shops around the town as a taster for the main event in a couple of months time. Between now and the autumn, you can vote for your favourites on a trail form available from the Town Hall, the Skipton Town Council offices above Barclays bank on the High Street, the Tourist Information Centre on Coach Street or from any of the participating shops and businesses.

The main 'Flock to Skipton' event launches on 14th August. Full details are available at Flocktoskipton.co.uk

Details on next year's Event will be available closer to the date.
